يا الله،
اغفر لي لأنني أبكي
لأنني وُلدتُ داخل الحروب.
ارحم عينيَّ
اللتين رأتا بقايا إنسان
في كيسِ سوبرماركت،
وجماجمَ أطفالٍ محطَّمة.
ورأيتُ أحياءً
تتحوّل إلى غبار،
وتصعد كالدخان إلى السماء،
وأنقاضَ بيوتٍ خَرِبت.
اغفر لي
لأنني لم أستطع أن أوقف بجسدي هذه الفظائع،
ولأنّ القلب تعلّم
أن يعدّ الموت
بالعشرات،
بالآلاف،
بعشرات الآلاف.
أنا رأيت.
أنا رأيت.
ولن أنسى
مَن كنتُ.

English Translation
O God,
forgive me for crying
because I was born into wars.
Have mercy on my eyes
that saw human remains
in a supermarket bag,
and the shattered skulls of children.
I saw neighborhoods
turn to dust,
rise like smoke to the sky,
and the ruins of homes destroyed.
Forgive me
for not stopping these horrors with my own body,
and for the heart that learned
to count death
by tens,
by thousands,
by tens of thousands.
I saw.

And I will not forget
who I was.
