Torture of Female Environmentalists in Iranian Prisons has led to Public Outrage on Social Media.

On October 24, 2018,

it was announced that Iranian authorities finalized indictments for the conservationists. Ms. Bayani and three of her colleagues

face charges of “sowing corruption on earth,

” a charge which can carry the death penalty.

The charge is based on a claim that the conservationists were

“seeking proximity to military sites

with the cover of the environmental projects

and obtaining military information from them.”

Reports indicate that the conservationists have been subjected

to long periods of solitary confinement and granted severely limited

and sporadic access to family and legal counsel

. According to radio Farda, Seyed-Emami’s body was found in his prison cell two days after his arrest

and officials claimed he had committed suicide

On January 30, 2019, nearly a year after their initial arrest

, Ms. Bayani and her colleagues were read part of the 300-page indictment

in a closed-door trial at Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court.

Ms. Bayani reportedly interrupted the reading of the indictment,

objecting that her forced confessions had become the basis for the indictment.

Nilofar Bayani allegedly stated that her forced confessions had been made.

At the same time, she was subjected to physical and mental torture and retracted all of them after the first round of investigations. Human rights organizations report that, after the first trial on January 30, Ms. Bayani has been absent from three of the five court sessions since, although her lawyer was present. Authorities have not provided a public explanation for Ms. Bayani’s absence.

On November 23, 2019, authorities convicted and sentenced Ms. Bayani to ten years on charges of “contacts with the U.S. enemy state” and “gaining illegitimate income.

” Authorities also reportedly ordered Ms. Bayani to repay all of her paychecks from the United Nations for the time she was employed at UN Environment. Ms. Bayani and her colleagues, who received sentences ranging from six to ten years of jail time, were informed of their verdicts verbally and denied written copies.

‘The revelation immediately led to a public outcry on social media by people living in Iran and abroad. The case is one of the most brutal instances of prisoner mistreatment by the Islamic Republic.

Iran’s Judiciary yesterday announced that the Court of Appeals had upheld the sentences of eight environmentalists, including Niloufar Bayani, for acting against national security and collaboration with the United States

Bayani has also revealed that her interrogators continually made sexual threats against her, showed her pictures of torture tools, made her listen to descriptions of others’ tortures and execution for hours, and pretended that they would give her a paralyzing or lethal injection.

Lawmakers and even the intelligence ministry have said there are no grounds for the arrest of the ecologists.”
Bayani has revealed that she wrote to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other high-ranking officials, such as former Chief Justice Sadeq Larijani, and described the abuse and torture, but her torturers became even bolder.

יומיים לאחר המעצר יצרו השלטונות קשר עם משפחתו של אמאמי ומסרו להם שגופתו התגלתה בתא המעצר וכי הוא התאבד.

כנגד נילופאר ביאני ועמיתיה ניצבו שלושה סעיפי אישום בגין ” זריעת שחיתות עלי אדמות”- סעיף שבגינו ניתן לגזור גזר דין מוות

. האישום מתבסס על הטענה שבאיאני וחבריה פעלו במתכוון בסמיכות לאתרי שיגור צבאיים

והם אספו מידע מודיעיני לצרכי ריגול עבור מעצמות זרות.

נמסר כי העצורים נידונו לתקופות בידוד ממושכות וזכו אך ורק לביקורים ספורדיים של קרובי משפחה וסיוע משפטי.כתב האישום כנגד נילופאר באיאני ועמיתיה כלל כשלוש מאות עמודים.

המשפט נערך בדלתיים סגורות בבית משפט מספר 15 של משמרות המהפכה.

על פי הדיווח באיאני הפריעה למהלך הקראת גזר הדין תוך שהיא מוחה על הוידוי שהוצא ממנה בכפייה

הוידוי הזה היווה את הבסיס שעל פי נפסק גזר הדין. באיאני טענה שהוידוי הוצא ממנה בכפייה תחת עינויים פיזיים ומנטליים וכי היא חזרה בה מההודעה לאחר סבב החקירות הראשון. לאחר מכן נילופר באיאני נעדרה משלושת הדיונים הבאים למרות שעורך הדין שלה כן היה נוכח ולא ניתן הסבר להיעדרה.

ב23.11.2019 הורשעה נילופר ביאני בקשרים עם צבא האויב של ארצות הברית ובקבלת הכנסה לא לגיטימית” . נילופאר באיני התבקשה להחזיר את כל המשכורות שהרוויחה בתקופה שעבדה עבור ארגון האומות המאוחדות. יתר החברים שנעצרו איתה קבלו את ההודעה על גזרי דינם בעל פה

וסורבו כאשר ביקשו לקבל את גזר הדין בכתב. נילופאר באיאני הוחזקה בבידוד במשך שמונה חודשים.

Letter from 7 female prisoners in Evin prison in support of environmental activists and sentenced to death

The “death penalty” by denying “the right to life” is one of the most egregious human rights violations, and the resulting injury will never heal.

For decades, Iranian society has suffered the pain of executing its loved ones.

These days, we have again witnessed the execution of several young protesters, some of whom are still at risk of execution.
We women political prisoners are in prison, which has weighed heavily on many of our bandmates under the ominous shadow of “death sentences” and death threats.

Environmental activists, who the Iranian people believe are among the noblest and hardest-working Iranians to protect the environment and the future of our land, are among them.

They were arrested with unfounded revolutionary guards’ cases and subjected to psychological, psychological, and physical pressure for two years in solitary confinement in the Security Ward to confess to unworked acts to ensure that irgc interrogators provided them with “executions.”

One of the most disgusting tools for interrogators to apply pressure to obtain confessions is to show them the scene of “execution”, and the threat of “execution” in solitary confinement alone and without anyone is far from “execution

.” Sepideh Kashani and Niloufar Bayani, our two cellmates, along with their colleagues, were sent to court in such circumstances and without any legal evidence and legal documentation, were called “spies” and even faced charges of “femoral on earth.”

spent 412 days in the Defense Ministry’s safe house in an area far from Tehran

Mahvash Shahriari and Fariba Kamalabadi have been in solitary confinement for many months under severe psychological, psychological and physical pressure since their arrest, threatening the death penalty on charges of corruption on earth and espionage so that their interrogators in their recent detention have explicitly spoken of the Intelligence Ministry’s attempts to twist seven Baha’i bodies.

Psychological pressure and physical torture were carried against Zeinab Jalalian to obtain a false confession that armed operations were carried out, which she never accepted. However, the efforts of security agencies to “execute” Shirin Alamhouli led to her “execution.”

We cannot understand the depth of the anxiety and suffering that has beset them.

Still, we are obliged to shout against “execution,” living under the horrific threat of “death” in solitary confinement alone.

We, several political prisoners in Evin Prison’s women’s ward, decided to express our support for them under the pretext of the fifth anniversary of the arrest of environmental activists and call for the support of international institutions, human rights, public opinion, and freedom-seekers for their release.

In this regard, we emphasize supporting “narrative” to record historical facts, as we consider it an attempt to stop human catastrophes,

so we support and appreciate the necessary steps taken by prisoners such as Sepideh Kashani and Nilofar Bayani to expose the dimensions of crime and repression in the dark of security houses and to inform public opinion, despite all the possible dangers.

In the end, we express our disgust with the death penalty and the denial of the “right to life” and any psychological “torture” such as threats of execution and physical torture and call on the public not to stand down to stop the “death penalty” of the protesters.
